Ponds and Water Life |

This is a small pond, with overhanging willows, hawthorn and other trees, so it tends to get filled with leaf litter and is visibly green and dirty. However - to the initiated pond-dipper, it is in fact crawling with life.
On a very quick dip, I found a variety of life including:
This is a pond different to the coprolite pits, and for that reason all the more valuable in the location. I visited it on 3rd November 2002 and was disgusted to find it fenced off with a sign apparently claiming it in the name "East Waste Ltd" as a "waste cycling environment". The sign can be clearly seen in the first photo. My first reaction was that this must be earmarked as a tip, though Stow cum Quy Fen is a nature resource and is an unlikely place for a tip as there is no access.
So I checked with the Environment Division of the Countryside Services Team at Cambs County Council. The reply was
Don't worry, the pond hasn't been scheduled as a tip. On the contrary, the sign you saw indicates that credits generated from landfill tax have funded environmental improvements to the pond. WREN (Waste REcycling ENvironmental) and East Waste frequently grant funds towards nature projects.
The pictures were all taken around 15:30 on Sunday 3rd November 2002 and may be clicked to download a full size version.
