Barton possess a duck pond, not show on the 1:50,000 maps, but also there is a pond shown (not investigated) at 409 559 and a moat at 410 560.
Wallace Badcock says (Jan 31 2004):
Until circa 1950? there were two ponds, adjacent to each other. One, filled in, was opposite "Pryors's Hold" (ancient house). In 1930's both were used by farmers to 'soak' cart wheels in summer and for filling water bowsers for steam engines and water for stock.
The are presently two more ancient ponds in village. One in meadow behind "Clare Farm" and another adjacent to "Great Close" bungalows, High St. (small estate!) The latter, I have always been told, is a spring ???
Wallace Badcock (born Barton).
