I have just got back from a conference held in the extremely interesting surroundings of the Ulster-American Folk Park in co. Tyrone; which sets out to show the kind of houses in which Ulster people lived in the 18th and 19th Cs, and then the log cabins etc which they built in Pennsylvania on arrival. Well worth a visit, if anyone is in that part of the world.

Anyhow, they also have an academic study programme there, in a Centre for Migration Studies, with a database of transcribed documents relating to migration. I had a quick look for Torrens names; it turned up Joseph Torrens of Ballynagard, co. Derry, who died in Philadelphia Pa before Sept. 11 1862; he was aged 34. From the Belfast News Letter. Also a John Torrance aged 28 labourer and Sarah Torrance spinster aged 26 who emigrated in 1851 aiming to go to Illinois; they had four boxes. It is not clear if they were married or brother and sister, and no place of origin, but I believe the ship went from Derry. There were others, but I ran out of time there.

On another subject, I met a woman at the conference who is researching the linked migration of a number of prosperous co. Antrim families, to whom I am related; children of the rev. James Brown of Garvagh went out to Augusta Georgia to join their cousins there, and they still preserve a portrait of him. She showed it in her lecture; quite an odd feeling to see such a long ago relative unexpectedly. I'm hoping to get a copy from her, so if I do, I'll pass it on to put with the Visitation list.
