Crithmum maritimum - Rock Samphire

Crithmum maritimum

Picture taken at Kerbihan in Brittany, 16 Aug 2002

A plant which is very common on rocky shores and cliffs. It has a very distictive and quite strong taste, which is not to everyone's liking. If you like the taste the leaves are fleshy and of a fairly good texture - though the older leaves can get a little stringy - and it makes a very pleasant nibble.

Most of the recipes you will find for it suggest pickling it.

It is not a plant I have experimented much with - Cambridge, where I live, is not exactly close to any rocky shore line, and my wife does not find the flavour pleasant!
