Cambridgeshire Ponds and Water Life
Swaffham Bulbeck Lode

On the Ordnance Survey Explorer series map, No. 226 (Revised 1999) is shown at map reference 542 650, what appears to be an area of fen woodland with about 9 ponds in it. The same area on the Landranger map 154 (1997) is indicated as woodland. One pond (541 651) is shown on the Landranger map.

These maps are wrong: the area concerned is arable farm land, and has been so for some 10-15 years to my knowledge. There are only two ponds in this area: one at 541 651 - which is the larger one and is an angling lake, and pretty too! The other is inside a fenced-off pheasant rearing area, and is heavily overgrown and difficult of access.

The Angling lake has large Carp so is cloudy and contains little vegetation. In June 2003 I did however find large strands of Water milfoil there, heavily silted though it was.

Photographs taken 13th June 2003 (to follow).
