Francis J. Torrance¹

Children of Francis J. and Jane (Waddell) Torrance, two:

1. i. Francis J. Torrance, Jr.² born June 27, 1859, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; died January 8, 1919; was First Vice-President and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company; and held directorships in many other large corporations. In 1884, he married Miss Rachael Dibert, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, who survives him. Issue, one:
   1. 1. Jane Torrance³ who married Mr. Horace Forbes Baker. Issue, two:
      1. i. Francis J. Torrence Baker⁴ born February 29, 1916.
      2. ii. Mary Rachael Dilbert Baker⁴ born December 2, 1917.
   2. ii. Elizabeth Torrance² who resides in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland.

Arthur Frederick Torrance

Dr. Arthur Frederick Torrance was born July 26, 1887, in Blackpool, England; a son of Herbert John Torrance, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and his wife, Ann Muscat Cross Torrance, born in Northamptonshire, England. Dr. Torrance was a student at Rugby, England, from 1897 to 1905, where he received his A.B.

He came to the United States in 1905; received his naturalization papers in the year 1915; was granted his A.M., at the University of Southern California, in 1914; his Ph.D., at New York University, in 1916; received a Certificate of Doctor of Tropical Medicine and Health, at the London School of Tropical Medicine, in 1924, and his M.D., at London University, in 1932.

His parents came to live in California in 1907, settling at Whittier, California, where both are buried. His brother Victor, is a resident of Los Angeles. Dr. Torrance has lead a number of expeditions into tropical countries where he and his associates studied such tropical diseases as African Sleeping Sickness, Leprosy, and Elephantiasis. He is a well-known lecturer, author and big-game hunter; resides at the Salamagundi Club, in New York City. 165
