Londonderry county had 194,099 inhabitants in 33,913 houses [presumably figures from the 1821 census].


Is a small town in the county of Derry, 100 miles north by west of Dublin, six north west of Portglenone, 10 north of Castle-Dawson, 12 south south-east of Coleraine, and 32 north west of Belfast. It is built in the form of a diamond with four small streets branching from the main ones. The places of worship are the Protestant church, a Presbyterian meeting house, and, within a mile of the town, a Catholic chapel. A free school has lately been established for children of both sexes on the foundation of Erasmus Smyth, with a house and two acres of land, given by the Mercers' company of London, who are the proprietors of this town, for the use of the master. A general market is held every Wednesday, and a linen market on the second and fourth Wednesday in every month. The fairs are Ash-Wednesday, Easter Wednesday, Whit-Monday, Wednesday before Old Midsummer, first Wednesday in August, (old style) October 10th, first Wednesday in November, (old style) and Wednesday before old Christmas. The population, according to the last census, was 973.

POST OFFICE.- Post Master, Mr. Felix Cunningham O'Neill. The Dublin mail is despatched at half past three in the afternoon, and arrives at forty minutes past nine at night. A by-mail goes to Coleraine at five in the morning, and returns at half past three in the afternoon. Letters for England go by the Dublin mail, those for Scotland by the same mail to Portglenone, and then to Donaghadee by Belfast.

No coaches pass through this town. The Royal Mail from Londonderry to Belfast runs through Ballymoney, distant eight miles, at half past twelve at night.
Hired carriers convey goods to any part of the Kingdom.
