Alliaria Petiolata - Garlic mustard

Alliaria Petiolata
Alliaria Petiolata (Garlic mustard) growing on a field edge

A very common plant in hedges, shady lanes etc. This one is growing beside a footpath across a cornfield.

Photo taken 9th May 2008.

When crushed the plant gives out a pleasant garlicy odor, so you might expect it to be a good salad plant. However when eaten, it hardly tastes of garlic at all and there is another taste I find not too pleasant - a bitterness. Probably best used sparingly in salads.

It's very common and pretty safe to experiment with as there's really nothing else you're likely to confuse it with.
